Hey everyone!
Hope you had a great Christmas and are having a wonderful New Year!
I got to go home to AZ for a couple months and really enjoyed my time there. It went by too quickly! Anyhoo, while I was home Camie and I decided we'd try our hand at making Mochi. If you recall from my 'Mmm... Food' post back in November, Mochi is delicious Japanese ice cream. Camie and I thought that it'd be easy enough to do, so I brought some rice flour from Hawaii and we tried our hand at it.
I'm sure you can tell from the title of the blog how it's gonna turn out, lol...
Here are our main ingredients. We decided to do chocolate mochi. Can't ever go wrong with chocolate :D
Grateful Camie was willing to be my cute model! She did a great job!
Pouring the flour into a microwave safe bowl.
Adding 3 cups of water
So... I think this is where we might of gone wrong. Using this recipe. I don't think it was for the type of mochi we were wanting.
Mixing the flour and water and microwave for 5 mins
Adding 2 cups of sugar to a saucepan
Plus 6 tablespoons of cocoa powder
Mix
Whisk in 1 cup of water and heat until it's dissolved
It's out of the microwave!
It looks like really sticky mashed potatoes lol
Mmm... this looks like chocolatey deliciousness!
lol ... except now it looks like mashed potatoes and gravy
Mix mix mix!
We dusted a pan with cocoa and sugar
Mixed some more!
It was starting to get pretty hard to mix, it was getting pretty thick.
We poured (I use that term loosely since it was pretty thick) the mochi into the pan we'd previously dusted with cocoa and sugar and let it set up
More dusting. This we'll use for rolling out and forming the mochi that will be wrapped around the ice cream
Dusting our hands so the mochi won't stick to us too much
Yeah... didn't really work, it was crazy sticky still, lol
Well, here they are portioned out
Oh yeah! Dark Chocolate Velvet ice cream! Mmm...
(Helpful side note: Don't leave the ice cream out to soften, it makes an AWFUL mess!)
Trying to flatten out the mochi like a tortilla, so we can wrap it around the ice cream
See? Awful mess. lol The mochi wouldn't stay wrapped around the ice cream
New idea!
Placing the mochi between plastic wrap and flattening it with a rolling pin!
Down side, it was kinda hard to remove from the plastic wrap!
But that looks like it'll work!
Here we go again!
Uh oh, ice cream is escaping!
Here's mine, the mochi just won't stay formed around the ice cream! And the ice cream is melting everywhere!!!
Camie's turned out the best. It's cuz she's so naturally awesome!
Mmm... umm... it looks like a cowpie... hahaha
This is a great picture of the crazy mess we made!
Trying to eat it without getting ourselves super messy!
HAHAHAHA YUM!
Uh... this looks like a human heart. That's not appetizing.
Christian was such a great guinea pig! He said they looked gross, but he'd waited so long for us to finish making them that he couldn't NOT eat it! lol What a trooper!
Yeah! Better than they look! He said he'd even eat them again!
Mmmm....
Hahaha, so maybe it wasn't a COMPLETE failure. But they sure did NOT turn out like this...
This is the mochi from the ice cream shop. This is what it's SUPPOSED to look like.
Not this! HAHAHA
But, good life lesson: not everything is perfect or turns out exactly as you planned. Best advice is to just go with it, learn what to do better next time, and have fun! I know we sure did! And, we have a funny story to talk about in the future!
Special thanks to Camie, Joel, Christian, Leslie, and Momma Woolf for making such fun memories with me <3 <3 <3

So sad I missed it!
