For the month of May, I decided that I would teach my lovely San Diego Relief Society sisters a fun and super easy way to have a 72 hour kit for each family. Below is how it went!
First you gather all your materials...
Left side is for me, Right side is for Rob. I dunno about you, but I don't know if that would last me 72 hours! Especially stressed out! But I'd have to make it work! At least it's better than nothing!
Ok so let's start out with a milk jug. We want to make sure it's nice and clean (no yucky milk smells or bacteria)
Here's the hot bleach water that I used to clean the cartons.
The appropriate ratio is on each bleach container.
I filled each jug about half way...
Then SHOOK them like crazy! Making sure I got the bleach water in every nook and cranny. It's a great work out too, by the way!
I let mine sit for a day, rotating periodically unless after you shake you fill it all the way with hot bleach water.
You don't really need to let it air dry because when you cut it open you can towel dry everything.
Then I used my beloved Goo Gone and a Pampered Chef stoneware scrapper (they have sooo many uses!) to remove the obnoxious labels. The excess Goo Gone can just be wiped off with a paper towel.
Next, I took my knife and cut along the sides about 1/3 the way down
I made sure that I left about one inch uncut, to form sort of a hinge.
Now we start packing! I started with the large things first...
Then just pretty much fit everything where they could!
There's no particular order here.
Once it was all packed up, I folded the top back over and screwed the lid on.
Here's the label that I used for the outside. I, of course, used my straight edge ruler to cut the labels out ever so nicely.
(At the end of this blog is a link to where I got this idea. They also had the shopping list for what you need and a pre-made label. I changed the contents to fit the tastes of my family, so I made my own label on a spreadsheet.)
I then filled out the date and who's kit is was and taped it one there. I taped the entire label with clear tape so that the label wouldn't get ruined if it got wet. Your jug does not need to be 100% air tight. These are only 6 mos - 1 year rotations (meaning you shouldn't keep it longer than that).
A great suggestion was to make them around General Conference, so that you can snack on them while you watch the next one in 6 mos and then make a new one!
Completed and all taped up!
VOILA!
A great 72 hour kit that ran us about $7 per jug. Not to shabby I think!

Here's my awesome San Diego Relief Society in action!
I came back to CA in May to teach them this super easy kit!
The label is to tell them how many of each to take for their kit
(Michelle came up with that great idea!)
The ladies in action! We only made one kit per person and then sent them home with instructions on how to do it for the rest of their families.
My awesome friend Michelle helping me run the show!
Everyone working hard at packing away!
Michelle's completed 72 hour kit! Easy as that!
They were so sweet to make me lots of delicious desserts since this was my last time seeing them!
This is a CRAZY SIMPLE way to have your family prepared for whatever comes your way! I hope you enjoyed the pics and make one too!
Give credit where credit is due! All the credit to this awesome 72 hour kit how-to goes to these fine ladies!
